Plot[]
The Shi'ar Imperial Guard demand that Jean Grey be handed over to them now so that they can execute her. Professor X, after looking through Lilandra Neramani's head, asks for a duel to the death where the winners decide the fate of Jean. Everyone present is teleported up to Lilandra's ship where they argue over the necessity of killing Jean. Lilandra converses with the Supreme Intelligence and Skrull Empress R'Klll. The duel is allowed and so the X-Men are taken away to train and recuperate for the fight. Xavier and Lilandra discuss the situation they are in but Xavier's attempts to sway her opinion prove fruitless. Cyclops and Jean meet up, with the latter wearing her 'Marvel Girl' costume.
The X-Men and the Imperial Guard are teleported to the 'Blue Area' of the Moon, which has a breathable atmosphere and the two groups begin to fight. One by one, the X-Men are whittled down until Cyclops and Jean are the only ones to remain standing. Cyclops is blasted down and this stresses Jean enough that she unleashes the Phoenix Force and reverts back to the 'Dark Phoenix'. Lilandra orders her men to open fire on the Phoenix and Xavier revives the X-Men, ordering them to take her down. Phoenix is weakened enough that Jean manages to reassert control and she uses her telekinesis to make Lilandra's guns fire on her, commiting suicide. However, the Phoenix Force rises from Jean's body and states that all the X-Men can give a little bit of life force in able to revive Jean. This plan works and Jean is brought back to life. The Phoenix, now peaceful once again, flies off into space and the X-Men are able to return home.
